The Samsung Comment for Cricket Wireless ($69.99 direct) is essentially the same phone as the Samsung Freeform III?we reviewed on MetroPCS ($19, 3 stars). Judging by that, we expect the Comment is a good choice for Cricket users looking for a lightweight, budget-price cell phone that's built for texting.
The Comment measures 4.4 by 2.4 by 0.4 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.3 ounces. The display is 2.4 inches, and sports a respectable 320-by-480-pixel resolution. The keyboard, meanwhile, looks like a slight smaller version that what you'd find on a BlackBerry Bold. That makes it a good choice for frequent texters.
The phone is a tri-band 2G 1xRTT (850/1700/1900 MHz) CDMA device with no Wi-Fi. No-contract plans on Cricket start at $35 per month for unlimited voice calls and text messaging. This phone is a great deal if you live in Cricket's coverage area and don't require fast Internet for Web browsing.
The Comment also works as a music player, though we ran into some trouble with music playback on the Freeform III. There's a standard 3.5mm jack on the top of the phone, along with 100MB of free internal memory and a side-mounted microSD card slot, which should make listening to music simple. However, the Freeform randomly skipped over tracks, and that bug may carry over to the Comment. There's also a 1.3-megapixel camera that has no flash or auto-focus capability.
Ultimately, if you aren't looking to consume media, and just want a low-cost, no-contract phone to make calls and send text messages, the Samsung Comment should be a solid choice.
