Windows 8 Chrome Uses Same Profile for Desktop and Metro

When Google released initial version of Chrome for Windows 8 we reviewed the comparison between metro Chrome and desktop Chrome we did noted that both versions don?t share add-ons, theme as if they?ve different profiles for Metro and Desktop, that?s true at that point. Few days back with Dev channel update things were changed altogether, one change we just covered is how to relaunch Chrome on desktop from Windows 8 Mode, another one is Chrome on Windows 8 uses single and same profile for desktop and Windows 8 modes where extensions or themes installed for one version available in other since they use the same profile. So the? Changes made to either of them will reflect in another, so some confusion has been avoided with this.

Are you happy with this change? share with us in comments.

Sunday's NFL games: Points pile up at fast pace

Eagles quarterback Michael Vick catches a lift from teammates Danny Watkins, left, and Dennis Kelly. (Rich Schultz , Getty Images)

?A pile of teams have run a pile of plays for a pile of touchdowns over the course of the NFL's life. But two weeks into this season, teams have scored more points ? 1,556 ? than they did in the first two weeks of any other season.

That breaks the record set, well, last season. Teams scored 1,502 points in the first two weeks of the 2011 season and went on to set the record for the first three weeks of a season as well (2,157 points).

Of the top five scoring performances over a season's first two weeks, all five have some since 2002.

What's it all mean? It means the business of defense is tougher now than ever before given the rule book leans toward the kind of scoring the league wanted, and now has.

Also, this generation of quarterbacks is more accurate than most that came before it ? six starters have completed at least 70 percent of their passes so far. Offenses are more willing to work the middle of the field and few teams have enough defensive backs to keep up.

Must-see game of the week

Eagles at Cardinals 2 p.m.
The skinny:
It is the beauty in the eye of the beholder bowl, with the Eagles having started the season at 2-0 despite nine ? count 'em, nine ? turnovers, including six interceptions by quarterback Michael Vick. Plus, the Cardinals having already used two starting QBs in their 30th-ranked offense. The Cardinals have not started a season 3-0 since 1974, and the Eagles are the first team in league history to win the first two games of the season each by one point. Philadelphia has squeaked by Cleveland and Baltimore.
The difference will be: Whether the Cardinals' struggling offense can move the ball against an Eagles defense that is tops in the NFC, allowing 267.5 yards per game. The Eagles' defense is tied for the league lead in interceptions with five. With two receptions, Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald would become the youngest player in NFL history to reach 700 career catches. Since the start of the 2005 season, no player has more receiving yards and more receiving touchdowns that Fitzgerald.
The call: Cardinals 27-23

Catch 'em if you can

Buccaneers at Cowboys 11 a.m., KDVR-31
At least some of the luster is off the Cowboys' sky-high hopes after a dismal 27-7 loss at Seattle last Sunday. Of particular concern with the Cowboys is the 182 yards rushing the Seahawks gained against Rob Ryan's defense. Cowboys QB Tony Romo is 3-0 against the Buccaneers, with 11 TD passes and no interceptions in those three starts.
The call: Cowboys 23-17

Bengals at Redskins 11 a.m.
Cincinnati QB Andy Dalton appears to have made a significant jump in his development in his second season in the league and is coming off a three-touchdown game against the Browns. Bengals RB Ben Jarvus Green-Ellis has a total of seven rushing TDs against his last eight NFC opponents and has 12 rushing TDs in his last 18 games overall. Washington's Robert Griffin III is the first rookie QB since 1969 to have a touchdown pass of at least 65 yards in each of his first two games.
The call: Redskins 28-21

Falcons at Chargers 2 p.m.
The Chargers are one of the surprising teams in the league because of the many injuries they suffered in the preseason, the loss of WR Vincent Jackson in free agency and the retirements of Marcus McNeill and Kris Dielman. Falcons QB Matt Ryan is 14-4 against AFC teams, and his team is 25-0 when he finishes a game with a passer rating of at least 100 ? including Monday night's 27-21 win over the Broncos at the Georgia Dome.
The call: Falcons 27-19

Patriots at Ravens 6:20 p.m., KUSA-9
New England coach Bill Belichick is 5-1 against the Ravens in his career, but few teams have protected the home field like Baltimore has of late. The Ravens have won 11 consecutive home games and QB Joe Flacco is 28-5 in home starts. The Ravens have been uncharacteristically generous on defense, including an eye-opening 486 yards allowed in their loss to the Eagles last weekend.
The call: Ravens 24-23

Rams at Bears 11 a.m.
The Rams aren't pretty as they try to climb out their struggles in recent seasons, but they play hard for first-year St. Louis coach Jeff Fisher. Also, QB Sam Bradford is beginning to find his groove.
The call: Rams 20-16

Quick hitters

Bills at Browns 11 a.m.
Buffalo RB C.J. Spiller, a former track All-American at Clemson, leads the NFL in rushing after two games and brings a double-take-worthy 10.1 yards per carry average into this season.
The call: Bills 30-17.

Jaguars at Colts 11 a.m.
The Jaguars ran just 38 plays on offense against the Texans last week and continue to stumble on that side of the ball as they try to build quarterback Blaine Gabbert's confidence. Colts QB Andrew Luck may be a rookie, but he already knows the benefits in getting Reggie Wayne the ball ? 15 of Luck's 43 completions have gone to Wayne.
The call: Colts 20-16.

Jets at Dolphins 11 a.m.
The Jets' decision makers have routinely acted as though they knew exactly how the handle the public swirl that comes with Tim Tebow on the roster. If they lose this one, they'll see a entirely different level.
The call: Jets 23-19.

49ers at Vikings 11 a.m.
Normally a home underdog that plays in a dome is a quality upset pick. But the 49ers' defense can be a tough code to crack even for franchise quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers, so the Vikings' Christian Ponder is looking at a tough day.
The call: 49ers 31-10.

Chiefs at Saints 11 a.m., KCNC-4
Given how the Chiefs have played defense thus far, especially in an injury-ravaged secondary, the potential exists for some pass-happy ugliness here. Saints quarterback Drew Brees has thrown for at least 300 yards in nine consecutive games.
The call: Saints 35-21.

Lions at Titans 11 a.m.
If you're the Titans and quarterback Jake Locker is your leading rusher, you have significant issues. Tennessee is averaging just 2.2 yards per carry, and Chris Johnson is averaging a what-is-wrong 1.1 ypc.
The call: Lions 35-16.

Steelers at Raiders 2:25 p.m.
Take a team trying to remake its roster, toss in some ill-timed injuries and you have a recipe for struggles. That's the Raiders' situation, especially at wide receiver and in the secondary. They worked out four street free agents this week at defensive back.
The call: Steelers 24-12.

Gay Liberal Senator opposes same-sex marriage | McBlog

Fascinating reading ? Same-sex Marriage debate last week in Australian Senate

Senator SMITH (Western Australia) (11:27):? I rise to add my views to the debate on the Marriage Amendment Bill (No. 2) 2012 and its desire to extend the definition of ?marriage? to include couples in same-sex relationships. My views are my own and have been formed after years of discussion, observation and careful consideration. I accept that to some the idea of an openly gay man rejecting a proposition to extend the definition of ?marriage? to same-sex relationships seems unusual or counterintuitive. In response, I say that it speaks to the often overlooked fact that opinion on the issue of extending the definition of ?marriage? is heavily divided even among gay and lesbian Australians. I do not doubt that there are many gay and lesbian Australians and their families and friends that support the legislation, but there are also others who do not?.

The debate on same-sex marriage has been a complex and controversial one. .. It has been controversial also because many have confused the religious institution of marriage with marriage as a civil institution. It is marriage as a civil institution that should demand the primary concentration and deliberations of parliamentarians. I believe any future deliberation by the parliament on matters regarding the legal treatment of same-sex couples should make as its focus the task of creating a starker distinction between marriage as a civil institution and its role for some as a religious institution.

My primary opposition to this proposal is born from my strong regard and faith in the cautionary, conservative and traditional approach to these matters. As I have said previously, I distrust sentiments and actions that seek to dismiss, modify or reject as relics our institutions and customs?institutions and customs that have evolved to serve our community well. I believe that cautious and considered change is critical if we are to bring about stability and continuity for our community.

I reject the suggestion of marriage equality. Marriage equality has been a slogan; it has been a campaign. The claim to equality ignores the widely accepted fact that marriage is an institution that has a long and well-accepted definition?a definition that is heavily laden with cultural meaning and values crafted by custom and by law over the years. It is an institution that has a common and well-understood meaning in Australia. I dispute the commentary in this place and others suggesting that the majority of Australians are ready to extend the meaning of marriage to same-sex relationships. I also dispute the view that the inability to utilise the Marriage Act restricts in any fundamental manner the quality of life experiences of gay and lesbian Australians.

The case for equality for gay and lesbian Australians was a battle too-long fought. It must be acknowledged that on the substantive matters of equality in Australia, gay and lesbian Australians can live at law without discrimination?.

Let me share with you the view of at least one other gay Australian who has challenged the current marriage equality movement. This comment was recorded in April this year in OUTinPerth, a community newspaper based in Perth, my home town. It said: The other thing that?s irritating I suppose about it is that it has become this orthodoxy within the community. Dissenting voices are not allowed, it?s just assumed that if you?re gay you?re for it, as it?s clearly a human right ? which it?s not. The article goes on to what I regard as the most important, but all too often forgotten, critical element in the debate when it says: The right is to have our relationship recognised equally by the State; the right is not to marriage.

?.By not agreeing to same-sex marriage, I am not choosing to endorse discrimination against my fellow gay and lesbians Australians or to be disrespectful to their domestic relationships, or to lessen the value of their commitments, companionship, love and unions. Instead, for me, it is an honest acknowledgement, of the special and unique characteristics of the union described as ?marriage?. http://parlinfo.aph.gov.au/parlInfo/search/display/display.w3p;db=CHAMBER;id=chamber%2Fhansards%2F2e9571fe-03fd-411b-9e11-6c9629474f79%2F0066;query=Id%3A%22chamber%2Fhansards%2F2e9571fe-03fd-411b-9e11-6c9629474f79%2F0000%22

RN Hckr: GTA 4 - Grand Theft Auto IV PC Game Full Version Free ...

Grand Theft Auto IV?is a sandbox-style action-adventure video game developed by Rockstar North and released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 video game consoles in Europe, North America and Oceania, on 29 April 2008, and in Japan on 30 October 2008. A Windows version of the game was released in North America on 2 December 2008 and in Europe on 3 December. It was made available on Steam on 4 January 2009. It is the sixth 3D game in the Grand Theft Auto series. Two episodic packs have since been released for the Xbox 360, the first entitled The Lost and Damned, released on 17 February 2009. The second is entitled The Ballad of Gay Tony, released on 29 October 2009. Both episodes were released for PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Windows on 13 April 2010[20] in North America and on 16 April 2010 in Europe. The game is set in a redesigned rendition of Liberty City, a fictional city based heavily on modern day New York City. It follows Niko Bellic, a war veteran from Serbia. He comes to the United States in search of the American Dream, but quickly becomes entangled in a world of gangs, crime, and corruption. Like other games in the series, GTA IV is composed of elements from driving games and third-person shooters, and features "open-world" gameplay that gives players more control over their playing experience. It is the first console game in the series to feature an online multiplayer mode.

As the first game of the critically acclaimed series to appear on seventh generation consoles, Grand Theft Auto IV was widely anticipated. A major commercial and critical success, it broke industry records with sales of around 3.7 million units on its first day of release and grossing more than $500 million in revenue in the first week, selling an estimated 6 million units worldwide. As of 9 June 2010, the game had sold over 17 million copies. It is the all-time highest-scoring game on three professional critic review-aggregating websites: TopTenReviews, GameRatio and GameTab. It is also the highest rated current-generation game on Metacritic and MobyGames.

Dutch voters go centrist, shun euroskepticism

The center-right Liberals and the center-left Social Democrats won the most seats in yesterday's parliamentary election, setting the two parties as likely coalition partners.

Dutch prime minister and Liberal Party leader Mark Rutte talks to supporters after exit poll results for the parliamentary elections were announced in The Hague, Netherlands, Wednesday Sept. 12, 2012.

The euroskeptical movement in The Netherlands was given a sharp blow yesterday in parliamentary elections that ended up with the two rival frontrunners gaining so much support, that they are now likely to be forced to work together.

The center-right Liberals of Prime Minister Mark Rutte came out of the elections as the largest party, with 41 out of 150 seats, up from 31. The center-left Social Democrats won 39 seats, a spectacular comeback for leader Diederik Samsom, whose party had 30 seats in parliament but had been polling around 15 seats only one month ago. The race between the two parties was too close to call until several hours after midnight.

The populist far-right party of Geert Wilders seems to have paid the price for internal struggles and walking away from the budget talks which led to the collapse of Rutte's government in April. His party, which wants The Netherlands to leave the European Union, shrunk from 24 to 15 seats. The other euroskeptic party, the Socialists, didn't gain any seats and remained at 15, despite a good showing in the polls until three weeks ago.

The largest party in parliament has the right to start coalition talks and is usually the one to put forth the prime minister, so Mr. Rutte will most likely have a second term as prime minister.? Tinke de Ree, a voter from Utrecht, praised his ?positive image,? while Anne Raden Karmo said in Amsterdam she feels that Rutte is the best politician to serve her interests as an entrepreneur.

According to a survey, one in four voters cast a strategic vote yesterday instead of a vote on the party they think is closest to their ideals. Rene Verburg is one of those strategic voters. ?The previous time I voted for GreenLeft, but this time I voted for the Social Democrats?, Mr. Verburg said in Utrecht, the fourth largest city here. ?The last time the Liberals gained just one seat more than the Social Democrats and I want to prevent that this time.?

In an interview with the state broadcaster NOS, Mr. Wilders partially blamed his ?defeat? on the horse race between Rutte and Mr. Samsom and said that ?many people have voted strategically.?

Ironically, the number of seats held by Social Democrats and the Liberals are now so large that any coalition that doesn't include both is unlikely: A phenomenon that Rutte himself has complained about in the past. The 2006 elections were also portrayed as a horse race between the Social Democrats and the Christian Democrats. In an interview with this reporter in 2006, Rutte called strategic voting ?annoying,? because it leads to two parties being condemned to each other. This time however, the phenomenon turned to Rutte's advantage.

The Social Democrats and the Liberals have worked together in a coalition before, from 1994 to 2002. However, since then both parties have ideologically moved somewhat to the left and the right, respectively. And since the two do not have a majority in the Senate, which has the power to turn down legislation, they may want to add another party to their coalition.

Verburg is not confident the formation process will move quickly. ?During the campaign, the parties have dug their heels in the sand on issues, and did a lot of mudslinging. I don't think we'll have a government before Christmas,? he said.

Exclusive: Romney on Obama's 'shoot first, aim later' attack

In our interview today, Mitt Romney did not back down from his belief that the Obama Administration's first response to the Cairo protest demonstrated "sympathy" for the attackers, but he also made it clear that he was ready to move on.

"What I said was exactly the same conclusion the White House reached, which was that the statement was inappropriate. That's why they backed away from it as well," Romney told me.

The Cairo Embassy's statement, released before it was attacked, said it rejects "the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others."

When I pointed out that the White House did not say the Embassy's statement showed sympathy for the attackers, Romney stuck by his remarks.

"Well, I think the statement was an inappropriate statement. I think it was not directly applicable and appropriate for the setting. I think it should have been taken down. And apparently the White House felt the same way," he said.

In an interview with 60 Minutes on Tuesday President Obama said the statement "came from folks on the ground, who are potentially in danger. And, you know, my tendency is to cut folks a little bit of slack when they're in that circumstance rather than try to question their judgment from the comfort of a campaign office." He went on to accuse Romney of displaying a "tendency to shoot first, aim later."

Romney wouldn't take that bait. He didn't respond directly to the President's barb the first time I asked. When I followed up, all he would say is this: "Well, this is politics. I'm not going to worry about the campaign."

Romney on the Federal Reserve and QE3

The Federal Reserve announced a third round of quantitative easing - or QE3 - today. A decision Romney told me proves his point: the economy is not bouncing back.

"And now the Federal Reserve, it says, 'Look, this economy is not going well. They're going to QE3. They're going to print more money," the former governor said.

"What Bernanke's doing is saying that what the president's saying is wrong. The president's saying the economy's making progress, coming back. Bernanke's saying, 'No, it's not. I've got to print more money."

Romney said he doesn't believe Bernanke's policies will grow the economy and told me he would appoint another chairman of the Federal Reserve should he be elected president.

"I think we have to have a leadership in Washington that encourages the private sector. I think printing more money, at this point, comes at a higher cost than the benefit it's going to create," Romney said.

Tune into Good Morning America at 7am ET tomorrow for more of my exclusive interview with Romney.

(AP) ? Republican Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama are trading tough words over the handling of foreign attacks on U.S. diplomatic missions in the Middle East, injecting foreign policy into a presidential campaign that has focused on a sour economy.

Romney accused the Obama administration of showing weakness in the attack that killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, and three American members of his staff. Romney blasted the initial statement from the U.S. Embassy in Cairo as disgraceful and "akin to apology," adding later, "It's never too early for the United States government to condemn attacks on Americans and to defend our values."

However, the embassy statement came before the protesters had breached the embassy's walls and was not an apology but an affirmation of the American policy of religious tolerance and respect. A statement by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton minutes before Romney's was released condemned the attack in Libya and said there was no justification for such violent acts.

Obama made a somber statement in the Rose Garden condemning the attacks and announcing plans to deploy additional Marines at diplomatic posts overseas. In an interview with CBS News' "60 Minutes" later in the day, Obama said the episode showed Romney's penchant for having "a tendency to shoot first and aim later."

"It appears that Gov. Romney didn't have his facts right," Obama said. That night, during a rally in Las Vegas, the president said he had a message for the rest of the world: "No act of terror will dim the light of the values that we proudly shine on the rest of the world, and no act of violence will shake the resolve of the United States of America."

The four diplomats were killed Tuesday as protesters overran and burned the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. In a separate incident, the American Embassy in Cairo was breached by protesters, and the nation's flag was ripped down, although no deaths were reported.

U.S. officials are investigating whether the attack in Libya was a terrorist strike planned to mark the 11th anniversary of the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Initial reports were that both the Libya and Egypt events had been motivated by anger over an anti-Muslim film made in the United States.

Obama made separate calls Tuesday evening to the presidents of Libya and Egypt, urging them to work with the U.S. to ensure the safety of diplomatic personnel. Obama and Libyan President Mohamed Magariaf vowed to work together to identify the Benghazi attackers and "bring them to justice," the White House said in a press release.

Obama told Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi "he rejects efforts to denigrate Islam, but underscored that there is never any justification for violence against innocents and acts that endanger American personnel and facilities," the White House said.

The Obama and Romney exchange came with less than eight weeks remaining in the tight presidential race, a campaign that has remained close for months and is being fiercely waged in fewer than 10 battleground states.

Economic concerns could play a more prominent role Thursday, when Romney appears at a rally in the Virginia suburbs outside Washington, D.C., and Obama holds an event in Colorado's Denver suburbs. Obama carried both states in 2008, but they remain up for grabs and heavily contested by both campaigns.

The Federal Reserve was expected to announce Thursday whether it plans to take new steps to jumpstart the U.S. economy. Many anticipate that the Fed will release a third round of bond purchases aimed at easing long-term interest rates and spurring borrowing and spending.

The economy has been the top issue throughout the race, with recent surveys showing Romney with a narrow advantage over the president when it comes to plans for reducing the nation's unemployment rate of 8.1 percent. On foreign policy, Obama has held an edge on which candidate is better suited to handle international affairs.

Romney, on Wednesday, defended his decision to issue his criticism Tuesday night, at a time it was not yet known that Stevens had been killed. Asked if he would have done so had he known about the deaths, he said, "I'm not going to take hypotheticals about what would have been known and so forth."

Some Republicans with experience in national security matters questioned the GOP candidate's handling of the events and top Republican leaders in Congress did not echo Romney's remarks. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said Obama "correctly tightened the security overseas." Asked about Romney's remarks, he declined to answer and walked toward his office in the Capitol.

Romney's account didn't mesh completely with events in Cairo.

The statement that he referred to as akin to apology was issued by the embassy in Cairo at midday Tuesday at a time the staff was aware of still-peaceful demonstrations in the area nearby. The mob breached the compound's walls and tried to burn a U.S. flag about four or five hours later.

The embassy statement condemned "the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims ? as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions," and noted that religious freedom is a cornerstone of American democracy.

Romney added that the White House later "distanced itself" from the statement, saying it hadn't been cleared by senior officials in Washington. "That reflects the mixed signals they're sending to the world," he said.

Obama said in the "60 Minutes" interview that the embassy was trying to "cool the situation down" and it was released "from folks on the ground who are potentially in danger."

"My tendency is to cut folks a little bit of slack when they're in that circumstance, rather than try to question their judgment from the comfort of a campaign office," Obama said.

He added that as president, "it's important for you to make sure that the statements you make are backed up by the facts, and that you've thought through the ramifications before you make them."

Genetic make-up of children explains how they fight malaria infection

ScienceDaily (Sep. 12, 2012) ? Researchers from Sainte-Justine University Hospital Center and University of Montreal have identified several novel genes that make some children more efficient than others in the way their immune system responds to malaria infection.

This world-first in integrative efforts to track down genes predisposing to specific immune responses to malaria and ultimately to identify the most suitable targets for vaccines or treatments was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by lead author Dr. Youssef Idaghdour and senior author Pr. Philip Awadalla, whose laboratory has been performing world-wide malaria research for the past 13 years.

?Malaria is a major health problem world-wide, with over 3 billion individuals at risk and hundreds of thousands of deaths annually, a majority of which are African children under the age of 5. Why are some children prone to infection, while others are resistant and efficiently fight the disease? These are the questions we sought to answer with our study?, Idaghdour says.

However, to succeed where many other studies have failed, the team used an approach different from the classic in vitro one, where the genome is analyzed using cells grown in a laboratory. Instead, they used an in vivo approach, analyzing blood samples of children from the Republic of Benin, West Africa, collected with the help of collaborators in the city of Cotonou and the nearby village of Zinvi?. ?This approach allowed us to identify how the ?environment? engages in an arms race to define the clinical course of the disease, in this case the environment being the number of parasites detected in the child?s blood running against the genetic make-up of the infected child?, Idaghdour explains.

?We used an innovative combination of technologies that assessed both genetic variation among children and the conditions in which their genes are ?expressed?. By doing so, we increased the power of our analysis by permitting us not only to detect the mutations, but also to capture their effect depending on how they affect genes being turned ?on? or ?off? in presence of the parasite?, Awadalla explains. ?Our approach made us successful, where million-dollar studies have failed in the past. There has never been this many genes associated with malaria discovered in one study.?

This major milestone in understanding how the genetic profile affects the ability of children to cope with infection could pave the way to the development of low-cost genetic profiling tests in a not so far future. ?Accurate diagnosis of the infectious agent is critical for appropriate treatment, of course. However, determining a patient?s genetic predisposition to infection would allow us to be more aggressive in our treatment of patients, whether we are speaking of vaccines or preventive drugs?, Awadalla says.

Congress courts veterans leading up to election

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Both parties are using a brief pre-election session of Congress to make campaign appeals to returning veterans.

Senate Democrats are pushing President Barack Obama's proposed $1 billion Veterans Jobs Corps to relieve high unemployment among servicemen and women returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. House Republicans are pushing a bill making it a crime to benefit from lying about military services or awards.

Lawmakers in both parties agreed this week to come up with more money to help the Veterans Administration reduce a disability claims backlog.

Obama proposed a job corps for veterans last February that would put place them in jobs restoring public lands and beefing up local police and fire departments. It cleared a preliminary test vote Tuesday, as was expected, but aides said progress could easily unravel as lawmakers negotiate what amendments and how many of them will be allowed.

Although the legislation is not expected to become law this session, it gives lawmakers a chance to display their support for the nation's 21 million-plus veterans before Congress adjourns for the campaign season.

The unemployment rate for veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan has been trending lower in recent months, but hit a bump last month. Joblessness among them was nearly 11 percent in August compared, compared with an 8.1 percent jobless rate nationwide.

Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida said the problem is likely to grow as troops are withdrawn from Afghanistan.

"For the troops, when they come home, the fight is not over. There's another fight when they get back home to America," said Nelson, the bill's lead sponsor who is in a tough re-election contest. "We need to give them as many opportunities as possible to succeed when they get back home here in America."

Nelson said Tuesday he still expects the GOP to try to block the bill.

The White House released a statement Tuesday declaring its support for the measure.

"Many of these veterans returning home have been unable to find suitable employment commensurate with their training and experience from over ten years of war," said a statement from the White House Office of Management and Budget. "Furthermore, America's public lands face enormous unmet infrastructure and facility maintenance needs, and this country's veterans have the skills to meet these demands."

House Republicans plan a vote this week on their "stolen valor" bill. The Supreme Court struck down a similar law in June, saying false claims about being awarded medals for military service are "contemptible" but are still protected by the First Amendment.

Rep. Joe Heck, a Nevada Republican who is in a tough re-election contest, says his legislation is constitutional because it would narrow the scope of the law to punishing just those who seek to financially benefit by lying about their service and awards.

The House passed separate veterans legislation Tuesday that directs the VA to improve outreach to veterans about the higher education opportunities available to them. The bill also requires states to take into consideration military training when granting licenses or credentials to vets in certain occupations.

House Republicans also plan a series of hearings reviewing the Veterans Affairs Department's performance on key issues, such as its lack of progress in reducing the disability claims backlog.

Lawmakers want to return to their districts to campaign for re-election as soon as possible. House members could leave as early as Friday and are expected to stay in Washington no later than the end of next week. The Senate is likely to have a shortened September schedule too.

That means there is almost no time to pass substantive legislation ? but enough time to try to score some points with voters.

Neither chamber has moved on Obama's veterans-jobs proposal until now. To attract GOP lawmakers, Sen. Patty Murray, chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs' Committee, incorporated some of their proposals, such as providing veterans with access to computers at one-stop centers for job searches. She said there are 720,000 unemployed veterans in the country.

"Too often on the day our service members are discharged, we as a nation pat them on the back, thank them for their service, but don't give them a helping hand into the job market. That has to end," Murray said.

Veterans groups have largely been supportive of establishing the jobs corps, but there has not been a clamor for that specific program. It's considered one of several steps that could improve the jobs picture for veterans.

Ramsey Sulayman, legislative associate at the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, said he understands that it's an election season and "everybody's angling," but he also believes lawmakers in both chambers are making a good-faith effort to help veterans as the session winds down.

"You hope people are doing things for altruistic reasons, but the bottom line is, if they're helping out veterans, we're happy with that," Sulayman said.

Even if the Senate ends up passing the measure, it probably will go nowhere in the House. Rep. Jeff Miller, R-Fla., chairman of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee, said his committee has received few details about the program and said he's focused on expanding existing job-training programs with the VA.

"What we're focused on is helping veterans find long-term unemployment and not some gimmick," Miller said.

The House will hold a hearing next week on the lengthy wait times that many veterans have experienced when seeking mental health care or in resolving disability claims.

"This is not political in any sense," Miller said. "Lives are at risk and the VA needs to be laser-focused on finding solutions to ensure our veterans who are suffering from the invisible wounds of war are treated quickly when they reach out for help."

Lawmakers also carved out additional money for dealing with disability claims from veterans as they unveiled a six-month spending bill that would finance the government's day-to-day operations until next March. The Department of Veterans Affairs says the flow of VA claims has increased 48 percent over the past three years and the claims have also grown more complex as returning soldiers seek compensation for more medical conditions.

Leadership and Vision to End Breast Cancer - Huffington Post

The parties have wrapped up their conventions and the Presidential candidates are in full swing on the campaign trail. During the conventions, the candidates are given a primetime platform to present big ideas. That is, after all, what Presidential candidates are supposed to do -- think big for America.

We want and expect that every person who holds the office of President of the United States will combine leadership with vision. That she or he will be someone who knows the limitations of what is and imagines what can be -- and then makes it happen. We see what can occur when that type of leadership exists in other fields. As an example, technology has advanced to such a degree that "groundbreaking," "cutting-edge," "bold" and "disruptive innovation" are the standards for those willing to take the risk to "change the game."

Those are labels that are thrown around quite often and are not always warranted. How do we know when they are appropriately applied? They certainly can be defined in terms of the result, for example how an innovation disrupted the status quo and fundamentally changed the way we treat a disease. That, of course, is in hindsight. We need to recognize and embrace what is game-changing and disruptive early in the process. That takes courage and a willingness to risk failure.

In the premier issue of Disruptive Science and Technology, May 14, 2012, Alan J. Russell, PhD, Editor-in-Chief and Highmark Distinguished Career Professor, Carnegie Mellon University, discusses disruptive innovation in the context of how it "will eventually benefit society" and "can harness radical new ideas to change the course of history." It is time we disrupt the business and system of breast cancer. It's time we disrupt the status quo. We must create an innovative environment for breast cancer research that will lead us toward the eradication of the disease.

That's the type of courageous, limitless vision we need from our leaders to achieve the level of innovation that builds a sustainable and resilient future. It's the type of vision we need to save lives. It is the vision that must be behind Breast Cancer Deadline 2020?.

Our deadline goal threatens to disrupt the status quo. And we must not shy away from that. Advances in areas such as immunology, the molecular basis of tumor genesis and vaccine technology together with a better understanding of public health approaches have opened up unprecedented opportunities for us to end breast cancer. I've talked about our Artemis Project? and the potential before us as we work cooperatively with breast cancer clinicians, researchers, advocates, policy makers and industry to develop a plan for a safe vaccine to prevent breast cancer. And I've explained how we are applying that approach to other questions in order to implement our plan of action to end breast cancer.

These are exciting times.

When we established the National Breast Cancer Coalition in 1991, we had a vision -- a world without breast cancer. The naysayers said we cannot end a disease. I say we can. I say we will.

When we set a deadline to end breast cancer by January 1, 2020, we knew it would be controversial. We knew some would scoff. We knew we couldn't do it alone. We knew we needed many stakeholders and, most importantly, our leaders in all arenas that play a role in breast cancer to be a part of the deadline.

That's why we want the President to demonstrate leadership and commit to making the end of breast cancer a national priority.

We have been -- and will continue -- asking women and men across this country who want to see an end to breast cancer to sign our Petition to the President. We will collect 290,000 signatures -- representing the number of women and men who will be diagnosed with breast cancer in this country next year. And we will deliver them to the President shortly after Inauguration Day. We are asking him to bring this nation's leadership, intellectual and creative forces to bear on a matter of utmost importance to everyone around the world.

Leadership matters.

In 1961, President Kennedy challenged this country to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade, and the Apollo program was born. The seemingly impossible challenge President Kennedy issued became breathtaking reality only 98 months later. It is time to reawaken this impulse to do great things and to honor our heritage by committing to a goal no less ambitious or achievable than the moon landing seemed half a century ago. Let's figure out how to end breast cancer by 2020. Together, we can do it.

Gun sales may be getting an Obama bounce

Jim Lo Scalzo / EPA file

As gun sales in the U.S. boom, shoppers examine handguns on display at a recent gun show.

By Allen Wastler , cnbc.com

?The gun business is booming. The question is, why?

Smith & Wesson stock was zooming Friday, thanks to a stellar earnings report. The firearms maker also boosted its outlook for the rest of the year. Because of the strong business, its backlog of orders more than doubled from the same quarter last year, the company is concentrating on boosting production and building inventory.

??We are underserving the market at this moment, we all know that, and that's a great opportunity going forward for us,? CEO James Debney said in a conference call with analysts.

CNBC.com: Pricey collectible weapons?

And another gun maker, Sturm, Ruger & Co., also hit a milestone of sorts in terms of meeting consumer demand. It produced its 1-millionth gun of the year, well ahead of last year?s pace.

"It took us nearly all of 2011 to build 1 million firearms, but in 2012 we accomplished it on August 15th,? said Ruger President and CEO Mike Fifer in a statement. ?

CNBC.com:?Gun sales, stocks booming

What?s driving the demand that has gun makers cranking up production?

Speculation has focused on fears of a coming regulatory crackdown on gun ownership. Liberal administrations tend to be anti-gun and so, the thinking goes, an Obama re-election would set the stage for stricter gun purchasing requirements. Hence, people are buying now in anticipation of difficulty later.

CNBC.com:?Romney?s ?unfavorables? still high, John McCain says

Indeed, looking at background checks for gun sales (a metric commonly used to gauge general industry performance) in 2009 showed a measureable increase that many attributed to Obama?s election.

Is it the same this year? Some anecdotal evidence tends to bear that out.

??I should put Obama?s picture on the wall up there,? said one New Jersey gun salesman, asking not to be identified. ?I?d name him salesman of the month!??

?But that sentiment is not universally shared. Some gun dealers suggest it may be less about regulatory worries and more about the immediate economy.?

CNBC.com: Will jobs report be Obama?s undoing?

??Sure, about a third of it is politics,? said a Maryland salesman, who also didn't want to be named. ?But the majority are people concerned about safety. They are worried about crime and looking at the economy and no one having jobs. They want to be protected now. So they?re buying.?

"The biggest new group of buyers now are senior citizens," Larry Hyatt, owner of a North Carolina gun shop, said on CNBC's "Closing Bell." "Ten thousand baby boomers a day are turning 65; they can't run, they can't fight, they got to shoot."

The motivation behind the rush could be key to how long the gun makers enjoy the surge in business. Fears of overregulation could dissipate rapidly after the current election season is over because there was no major change to gun regulations after Obama was elected the first time. Indeed, one analyst downgraded Smith & Wesson?and Ruger?stock last month, citing fears that their torrid sales pace this year is unsustainable.?

Not all analysts agree, however.

"We think there is broader drivers, broader acceptance of the use of guns and more target shooting," said Cai Von Rumohr, an analyst with Cowen & Co., also appearing on CNBC. "So we think it's more than just safety and more than just fear of not being able to buy guns."
